George Donovan came to us in July 2016 from his hometown of Winchester, VA . He most recently served as the Director of Music and Arts at Bethel Lutheran Church, and was the Minister of Music and Chapel Musician for the Village at Orchard Ridge Retirement Community (A National Lutheran Community). George’s love for music began at an early age, and he began studying piano at the age of 5. Active in church choirs and ensembles all his life, it was at age 15 when George began playing piano in the orchestra at his home church, and began leading worship with “The Cause”, a student-led worship team and choir for the church’s youth group.
After graduating high school, George attended Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida and studied church music. During this time he was a member of the “Southeastern Singers”, the school’s touring gospel choir, and also served as the music pastor at Victory Church and Faith Lighthouse Assembly of God Church in Plant City, Florida. Since then, he has served in a variety of church traditions including Methodist, Church of the Brethren, and Non-Denominational, before moving back to Winchester, VA in 2011 to serve at Bethel Lutheran Church.
While back in his hometown of Winchester, George attended Shenandoah Conservatory of Shenandoah University where he studied voice and organ, earning a Certificate in Church music.
George is an active member of the American Guild of Organists, and the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians (ALCM) and has been called upon to offer workshops and music clinics for church musicians. His passion is music that inspires and creates community for all ages. George is a firm believer that pillars of traditional worship music can co-exist with modern worship practices, renewing worship for today’s church.
When he is not making church music, George enjoys a good night of Karaoke with friends, a musical at the theater, or you might catch him on the beach soaking up some sun or in the mountains, hidden in the forest.
