He was a veteran, who had lost half of one leg during the war many decades ago. His dear wife is now under hospice care. One day, he told me there was something he desperately needed and wanted to know if I could possibly help. It seems that as a youth, he went through confirmation in the Lutheran church. He said that during the horror of war and his recovery afterward, what kept him going was all he had learned from the Small Catechism in that confirmation class. Over the years, he had moved into other churches, but now, as he faced this difficult time with his wife, he found himself yearning for a copy of Luther’s Small Catechism. He wanted to know if there was some way I could find a Lutheran catechism for him. So I called the Living Springs office and made arrangements to come pick up a copy. When I gave him the Small Catechism, he embraced it with gratitude and was totally overwhelmed with emotion. God touched his heart that day (and mine) with strength and love, all because of the mighty foundations of a Lutheran faith that the Spirit had given him as a youth!
