After thinking about singing “Jesus Loves Me” with my grandchildren, I had an epiphany about the experience. While it occurred to me that moments like this are definitely mission moments, I realized something else even more important. I had been singing “Jesus Loves Me” long-distance over the phone while my grandchildren are being driven to and from daycare in the mornings and afternoons. They listened, but didn’t sing along like they do with other songs they have learned at daycare. My granddaughter loves to sing while my grandson seems to rather focus on a book. But during a recent visit, I was able to sing “Jesus Loves Me” in person, and it was a completely different experience. We touched, smiled, and looked into one another’s eyes while we sang. My granddaughter’s face lit up and she sang along. At age 2, she may not yet understand who Jesus really is, but she knows I love and care for her – and that is one way she comes to know Jesus at her tender age. Thus, it is also with my grandson, who loves books. I gave him a Veggie Tale book on this trip for his 2nd Baptism birthday. Reading this book was our connection to sharing Jesus loves him, too. This experience is a reminder that we can tell someone that Jesus loves them, but sometimes that just doesn’t mean much if we haven’t looked into their eyes, smiled at them, hugged them, fed them, or done whatever it takes for them to know Jesus is real and is using us to bring that love in a way they can understand.
