The Spirit led me to read something very poignant. When ancient sailors used to create maps of their travels, they would draw out what they feared. Maps would have labels that said things such as: “Here be dragons”; “Here be demons”; “Here be sirens”.
It was a common thing to see, the mapping of one’s fears. But there was one sailor named Sir John Franklin, and his maps looked a little different. A man of faith, his maps crossed out the phrases “Here be dragons”, “Here be demons”, and “Here be sirens”. Instead he wrote “Here be God”.
I love that. “Here be God”. In the midst of everything, “Here be God”. In the midst of our fears. In the midst of our loneliness. In the midst of the hustle and bustle of a fast-paced world, “Here be God”.
I think it is so easy to go through the motions of each day without taking the time to even think about God. It’s easy to forget that God is always there with us. God is there when we are afraid or sad. There are no uncharted places in our lives where God isn’t. “Here be God”. God’s there. It’s so easy to focus on whatever is ahead of us that seems daunting. It’s easy to focus on the dragons, demons, and sirens in our lives. But what would it be like if we crossed those things out and just focused on God. Focused on the fact that no matter what, “Here be God”.
